What happens on game day?

Players are expected to arrive 10 minutes before the start of their game for warm up and direction from their coach. We encourage all players to play it safe and wear a mouthguard!

During a game, players must sit on the bench alongside their coach (not with their parents). Players must place their drink bottles near the team bench at the start of the game. Following the game, the coach will have a quick chat with the team about the game.

All families are expected to assist with scoring throughout the season. When scoring, you will either operate the scoreboard and clock or the online scoring. Scorers are also responsible for the possession arrow.

Who runs the club?

The St Christopher’s Junior Basketball Club is run by a committee of volunteers. The committee is responsible for the governance of the club in accordance with Keilor Basketball Association and Basketball Victoria policies and regulations.

New volunteers are always welcome to join the committee. Volunteering is a rewarding way to give back to the club, make a valuable contribution and help play an active role in the club’s future direction.

Who fulfills the role of team manager?

Each team has a team manager, usually a parent / guardian of a player. The team manager assists with the smooth running of the team and is a key link between the coach, parents and the committee. Team manager assigns parents to score each game. Team manager is your first port of call for any questions.

What if I’ve never played before?

Our club caters for players at all levels of skill and experience. Teams are selected by the boys and girls coordinator, and then graded by the Keilor Basketball Association to ensure that every team is placed at an appropriate level. The KBA also run development programs.

Our club expects players to show commitment to their team by attending training each week, be available for all games and arrived for games 10 minutes before starting time. If players can’t attend training or games due to illness, injury or special occassion, they need to advise their coach and team manager.

What does the club expect from parents and guardians?

Each parent and guardian will be rostered to score a few times each season. You’ll sit on the scoring bench with a parent from the other team. Instructions will be provided on how to score. One volunteer team manager is required for all teams.

What are the expectations when attending a game?

Basketball is an excellent recreational activity for enjoyment and health.  It’s also a lot of fun to watch! However, sometimes the behaviour of a participant (Player, Parent, Spectator, Coach, Administrator or Official) ruins the fun, or even the safety, of others.

During the game, spectators are encouraged to support and call out positive comments, but there must be no coaching, instructing or officiating. Coaches are volunteers, please treat them and the referees with courtesy and respect and let our players have fun!

No spectator is to speak directly to the referee at any time. Referees wearing green are trainee referees, please be considerate, all umpires must learn somewhere.  Remember, that referee you are angry with could be your son or daughter, please treat them with respect.

Keilor Basketball Association (KBA) has a Participant Behaviour Policy which provides a clear and comprehensive statement of expectations.

CODES OF CONDUCT

Basketball Victoria have developed Codes of Conduct so that we can all be clear of the behavioural expectations that apply to us. These Codes are designed to assist everyone to safely receive the maximum benefit from their involvement in basketball.

Remember that breaches of code not only undermine the enjoyment & safety of the sport -they can also lead to sanctions being applied to individuals, teams or even the Club. In such circumstances – ignorance of a Code is not accepted as an excuse.

How are teams selected?

It is the role of the boys and girls coordinator, in consultation with the Executive Team if necessary, to allocate players to a team which is best suited to the player’s skill and ability. It is not a parent or guardian’s responsibility to approach coaches or team managers to find a team for their child. Nor are coaches allowed to ‘poach’ players from other teams. Find out more >

How are teams graded?

At the start of each season, Keilor Basketball Assocation splits each age group into grades (A to J), with 4 to 12 teams per grade. Each St. Christopher’s Junior Basketball Club team is allocated a grade. The first four rounds of the season are grading games. The results of the grading games determine if your team will remain in their initially allocated grade, or move up or down.

What uniform do I wear?

All players must wear St. Christopher’s Junior Basketball Club shorts and a reversible singlet during Saturday games. These can be ordered online. We hold try-on sessions before the start of each season. Find out more >
