Team Selections

It is the role of the boys and girls coordinator, in consultation with the Executive Team if necessary, to allocate players to a team which is best suited to the player’s skill and ability.

It is not a parent or guardian’s responsibility to approach coaches or team managers to find a team for their child. Nor are coaches allowed to ‘poach’ players from other teams.

If there is anything the club should know before players are placed in a team, please get in contact with the club as soon as possible.

Team selections are not indefinite selections. They are a placement for a single season only.

Requests to join a particular team

We understand children often want to join a particular team, so they’re playing with their friends.

However this is not always ideal due to:

  • Other children ahead of you in the waitlist may already be tagged for that team
  • Variances in skill and ability, particularly if the friend has already played a few seasons
  • Number of children on the team playing rep-level basketball
  • The team may already be full (we don’t ‘push’ players out)
  • Training time may not suit

If your child isn’t placed with their friend this season, there may be opportunity in future seasons.

Teams for new seasons

Towards the end of each season, the girls’ and boys’ coordinator speaks to each coach about their team. If it is apparent a player may be better suited to another team, the girls and boys coordinator will call the parent or guardian to have an open discussion. In the younger age groups particularly, teams often get mixed up each season due to changes in player’s ages and cut-off dates, and their difference in skill and ability.

This ensures players aren’t advantaged or disadvantaged by their date of birth, nor feel misaligned with their teammates.

Changing teams helps players learn from each other, broadens their social network and enables coaches to run training best suited to the team’s ability. Typically by the time players are in under 14s, there is less player movement between teams.
